'Do No Harm' - The Pitch

Like it or not, PITCHING is an essential part of getting a feature film off the ground. Here is the pitch video that I put together for 'Do No Harm'. It's been an invaluable tool in communicating what this project is about to potential investors, cast, and crew. As of today, we have over 75% of our budget secured. If you, or someone you know, is interested in hearing more about what it might lo...

The Way That I Take

Well, here it is - my 'proof of concept' short! I'm so incredibly proud of the story the team was able to create and capture... and overwhelmed and excited that it is but the first step towards something much bigger... "When a simple mistake turns into a fatal error, a burned out nurse becomes trapped by the system, dangerous expectations, and the corrosive lies we tell to survive."
Hey Again!

Welcome aboard!
@@ChrisHartwell thank you! I'm excited to learn more from you!
I wish RUclips would recommend me more videos like this with great information instead of me having to spend hours searching to actually find a good educational video about cinematography
Well, I'm glad you persisted and made your way here! Here's hoping the algorithm continues to improve its recommendations for ya :)
At the risk of sounding 'self-promoting', if you found this helpful, you may also enjoy my video on _Cinematic Lighting_ :)
Great video!!
Thanks so much!
well taught and very effective visuals to enhance it. it's almost like you're a professor or something lol seriously tho sometimes even well intentioned professors don't explain things this effectively. i'd prob vote on lenses next but i'm for all of it of course.
Hey, thanks! Yeah, the concepts can we tricky to break down! It was a fun challenge to figure out the clearest ways to explain and demonstrate though :)
@@ChrisHartwell your efforts did not go unnoticed, it did the trick. And makes something that could be very complicated to articulate seem more simple and straightforward.
Hartwell created real cinematic depth with his own interview shot - even used the laptop as a foreground element. Respect 🫡
This was great Chris. Needed it.
@@MatthewAughtry Thank you, brother! You’ve been a big inspiration for me - thank you for continuing pursuing your art with passion, heart, and conviction.
Very Helpful greatly appreciate this video I will be sharing it to get it more views
@@ObservingTheApocalypse1 hey, thanks! Every little bit helps!
This was great, thank you so much!
@@benraffertycreative For sure! It was fantastic fun to shoot - so glad you enjoyed!
Hella nice video, gonna make some good lit videos after seeing this
Absolutely! Can’t wait to see your stuff!
This video is sooooo good, people would charge big money for this, thanks man!
Well, it’s yours for free, good man :)
Amazing video
Thanks, Chewy!
Art
High praise :)
4:43 what a shock! 😮 I really thought that’s what we’re naturally seeing…
Crazy, right?! That sunlight is _powerful_ stuff!
Very insightful and practical advice on how to improve your lighting. Thanks, Chris!
_Thank you_ sir! Glad you found it engaging and helpful :)
@@ChrisHartwell Oh, and I would love to see one on movement (though they all sound interesting)
@@RyanRaydiar For sure! Movement will be _a lot_ of fun to discuss!
So happy to see you active on RUclips, Chris. You are one of the most interesting voices movie wise out there, and sorely missed you when you took a step back. These videos are fascinating and illuminating (pardon the pun) for cinephiles like me. Great, thorough work, well explained and constantly giving visual examples. Been following your work since you guest appeared on the Schmoes Know show. Keep it up, and greetings from Spain!
Hey, thanks man! It's fantastic to be back producing videos - I've missed the space and the interactions :D Thanks for sticking with me for so long!
I'm so pleased I don't notice the green overtones at all when i watch the actual film.
This is amazing!!
Hey, thanks! So glad you enjoyed :D
Great insights. My career was music so I know little beyond loving cinema & telly, & it’s hard for me to know -or elucidate why I like something. Hence, I enjoy, very much, your weekly H/W guides. ….I’d love a lesson on sound, myself…. 😀🎉
I absolutely love sound design and music in film - if used right, they can bring _such_ power and depth to the image. I would _love_ to do a video delving into those at some point :D
@@ChrisHartwellthat would be wonderful: you’re very busy, though, so I’m thrilled to learn the other cinematic tools on which you concentrate. 🇦🇺🦘
I'm glad I came across this! Even though I'm not in school anymore I'm still going to watch these! You were one of my favorite teachers I ever had! (It's Alexzandria by the way 👍)
Alexzandria!! Glad to know you’re watching, enjoying, and still learning!
Light an Color next pls. Great video!
High praise from a Time Lord! _Light and Color_ will be a lot of fun!
Light and Color!
An excellent choice, Andrew! An excellent choice :)
Yes! Great insights, Chris! Thanks for sharing. (and that marker looks very forlorn)
Hey, thanks man! A great learning experience for me as well! (and yes, I'd say that poor marker is rather forlorn as well! haha!)
Do I know you from somewhere?
Not sure, good man! Looks like you're a Disneyland fan? I worked there for 9 years :)
still waiting for del toros hobbit.
In the theatrical edition without color grading, it just looks like it was shot on an iPhone
When Obi-Wan brings Luke to his home, the audience literally gets more exposition in 90 seconds than the entire sequel trilogy offers in its runtime and in a format that doesn't even break the internal logic of the scene and the characters and actually makes us /care/ about those characters and how they relate to the overarching plot of the film.
Inspiring interview! Danny's great and I'm now excited to check out his film! Thanks for this!
Yes! Danny's a great guy and extremely talented filmmaker! Enjoy the film :D
Fantastic stuff! So fun watching the before and after and actually seeing what doing that script analysis can add!
Thanks, Ryan! It was a lot of fun to put together and see that transformation for myself!
how much green would you like? yes
The makers of the movie are making another one. It's not a direct sequel to Prospect but it'll be set in the same universe. Their social media's usually go by the name 'fringedrifters' or 'the fringe'.
Well, well, well. What a fantastic lesson. Tactics & objectives as well as beats, though the latter means something slightly different, are all used when teaching conducting at university in music school. Every work has its own peculiar interpretation or plan with each conductor. But this has definitely helped me to understand how scenes across films are planned & developed. Very interesting, Chris.✅
Fascinating - I love knowing that! Thanks for sharing :D
We're can I watch this cut?
This is such a cool way of showing how better script writing translates to the screen, loved this!
Hey, thanks! It was fantastic fun to put together, glad you enjoyed!
Yes, The Fellowship is my favorite of the LotR movies. Yes, I watched the video just to reaffirm my beliefs.
I would be upset if they replaced the scene where Bilbo finds the ring. I prefer the original version so much more because its creepy. It's dark, grey, Bilbo looks more how I imagined him in the book, and Gollum's screams sound more disturbing. Gollum in Fellowship I'd argue is creepier and less cute than his design in TwoTowers/ROTK/Hobbit. Just my opinion.
I loved this! So different, and creative to see.
Hey, thanks! There is more headed your way soon 👈🏼👈🏼😎
@@ChrisHartwell can't wait!
A little late but just wanted to say really good insights! What I came to realize again from your short film is just how important it is to show not tell. Only 2 words were said but the rest was visual and non-verbal. Nice work!
Thanks! I completely agree - this is a _visual_ medium and we should, as often as possible, capitalize on that!
this is cool kinda wanna try this just for my own practice lol
You 110% should! It’s a blast and a great creative workout!
Great content!
For sure! Danny has been a huge inspiration for a while! It was a joy to pick his brain :D
Crazy to see this video, been a fan of both your channels. Been an insanely great resource as I develop my own projects. Hats off to both of you.
Thanks so much, Joseph! Glad to be apart of your creative journey! And yes indeed, we all love a good "crossover event" :D
How do I watch this cut?
It’s such a great adventure film and a great example of the heroes journey
That part at the end with the addition of Frodo from the horrific _Hobbit_ movies _was_ a joke... right? Please?
NO WAY! I remember you showing us Danny's videos in class! this is huge! I can't waut to watch it!
It is indeed - such a wonderful accomplishment! Enjoy the film :)
I've been waiting for this one!
Me too!
It's so weird seeing all these familiar places with lighting that is actually nice
It makes a difference, eh? :)
Another terrific video from my favourite channel and Chris. ❤ Brisbane. 🇦🇺 Coming from the position of a retd musicologist, the accompanying score’s essential. It adds tremendous depth here; specifically grounding us in reflection, one of the motivations behind this….
_Such_ high praise! Thank you so much :D And _yes_ I love the score too and absolutely agree it adds _so_ very much!
I showed this to my eleven year old sister and she said "wow, that looks really hard." Yes, Jules. It WAS hard.
You're welcome, Caroline!🤣 (and you _crushed_ your scene)
@@ChrisHartwell That reminds me...I still need to edit my scene...
@@flippadipdip Hmm... *opens up final grade*
Beautifully done, and inspiring. Your students are blessed to have you as a teacher.
Hey, thanks Ralph! They're a blessing to me as well!
I do not know much about film theory. I love movies and story telling. Unfortunately I am not in the film business and I guess I am to old and to scared to get into it. If I see this film about a film I understand myself why I love movies. This barebone dialog evolving into a heartbreaking scene that made my cry. Thank you for this wonderful homework and be the force with you. Always.
Filmmaking is indeed a tough _industry_ and next to impossible to break into. Fortunately, if there is a passion simply to tell stories in the medium, very little is stopping us. Pull out your phone and film something :D So glad that you found the scene moving!
